Independent used-car advice

Better car decisions start with better information.

Practical advice for buying, owning, maintaining, preparing and selling used cars — based on nearly three decades in the motor trade and the work I still do today.

I explain the decisions behind the car, the paperwork and the deal in plain English, so you can judge what matters without a sales pitch.

Whatever stage you’re at, start here.

Whether you’re looking at your next used car, getting ready to sell one, visiting a dealership or simply trying to look after the car you already own, there’s a guide here to help.

What Forecourt Insider actually does

It’s about the judgement behind the next decision.

The answer is rarely just a mechanical instruction or a headline valuation. It’s understanding whether a service record makes sense, what an MOT advisory really means, whether a condition issue changes the deal, what can reasonably be negotiated and where preparation is worth the money.

That means looking at buying, ownership, maintenance, presentation and selling as connected parts of the same real-world car journey.

Why you can trust it

Built on real experience, not theory.

I’ve spent around three decades working in the motor trade, and I’m still working in it today. Over the years I’ve been involved in buying, valuing, preparing and selling cars within the main dealer world, but cars have always been a genuine interest outside work too.

Forecourt Insider brings those two sides together — professional experience and a proper enthusiasm for cars.

One real-world result

What thoughtful preparation can change.

On the 2003 Honda Accord revival, roughly five hours of hands-on preparation and £61.94 in bumper-repair materials went into making the car more honest, presentable and easier to understand. It sold for £1,400 within a few hours of being listed.

That doesn’t prove a fixed value uplift. It does show why condition, photographs and straightforward presentation matter when somebody is deciding whether a used car is worth their time.

Car care and ownership

Look after the car without wasting money on the wrong jobs.

Good ownership is about safe, sensible maintenance: knowing the basics around tyres, brakes and fluids; washing and improving a car carefully; and recognising when a job needs the right equipment or a professional. It isn’t about turning every owner into a mechanic or a detailer.

Inside the motor trade

Understand the process without becoming cynical about it.

Dealers have to assess condition, value cars, prepare stock and make decisions within a real market. Understanding that makes it easier to ask better questions about a valuation, a part exchange, a dealership visit or a problem after collection.
